About the Artist

Born in Hampshire, Mary Wilson studied at Guildford Art College in the 60's, but gave up her career as an artist to work as a secretary in the London area, before working her way around the country, eventually reaching Scotland (via Spain and Gran Canaria) in the early 70's. She joined the McGregor Clan and settled in Blairgowrie, Perthshire a few years later.

During the 80's Mary McGregor took up art again as a hobby, but this soon developed into a career in commissioned drawings and paintings of animals (mostly dogs and cats) and architecture, along with the occasional human portrait and landscape painting.

Dogs and small animals have always been part of the McGregor household and Mary plays an active part in the local dog rescue. Horses are a more recent passion and, through meeting and painting them, she has come to appreciate the beauty and character of these magnificent animals. Her love of all animals is reflected in the way she captures their personalities. Pastel is her preferred medium for most horses, but she also works in pen, water-colour, oils, acrylic, or pencil, to suit the subject and personal preferences.

Whatever animal Mary is commissioned to paint, although working mainly from photographs, she does like to get to know them, if possible through meeting them, otherwise through seeing plenty of photos and gathering information from their owners. She also likes to be sure the recipient of the picture is 100% satisfied before calling it finished.
